N-acetylneuraminic acid, commonly known as sialic acid, also known as bird's nest acid, is a naturally occurring amino sugar. It was originally isolated from bovine submandibular mucin, hence the name sialic acid. Sialic acid is a nine-carbon monosaccharide derivative containing an amino group, which is the general term for all N- or O-derivatives of neuraminic acid or ketone-deoxynonanglutulac (KDN).
Sialic acid usually exists in the form of oligosaccharides, glycolipids or glycoproteins, mainly in the form of short-chain residues at the ends of glycoproteins and glycolipids. There are several known sources of N-acetylneuraminic acid, free N-acetylneuraminic acid, oligosaccharide lactose, sialic acid-containing gangliosides, and caseinoglycomacropeptide (CMP, also known as glycomacropeptide GMP, Glycomacropeptide, and caseinoglycomacropeptide).
The N-acetylneuraminic acid from GWB is produced by fermentation of Escherichia coli SA-8 (strain collection number CGMCC NO.5585) through bacterial liquid separation, ultrafiltration concentration, removal of impurities (protein, soluble salts), purification of polysialic acid, hydrolysis of polysialic acid, purification of monomer N-acetylneuraminic acid processes. HPLC analysis shows the purity of N-acetylneuraminic acid of is higher than 99%.
